Associate Degree in Environmental Horticulture

  • Course description The Associate Degree in Environmental Horticulture is a full-time, two year course (or equivalent part-time) offered at the Burnley Campus of the University of Melbourne. With over 100 years of history, Burnley Campus is one of Australia’s foremost specialist horticultural campuses, set in 9 hectares of heritage-listed gardens and located just 7km from Melbourne’s CBD.

    The program focuses on the development of skills relevant to growing, managing and designing with horticultural plants. Students will receive a strong technical and theoretical foundation in ecology, plant science and the techniques of sustainable horticulture. This is supported by studies in communications, business management, staff supervision, occupational health and safety and first aid.

    Structure


    The course begins with practical subjects that introduce the propagation and care of plants and the biology and science of plants, including photosynthesis. The second year of the course emphasises the management of plant environments. Students complete an eight-week industry placement, undertaking a work program in the horticulture industry under the guidance of trained professionals. The course includes excursions to the Royal Botanic Gardens, historic gardens, heritage-listed gardens and environmental rehabilitation sites.

    There are no majors in the Associate Degree in Environmental Horticulture as the course follows a set structure.

    Honours

    No honours year available; however if students meet the entry requirements they may be eligible to study the Bachelor of Environments. Students may be eligible for some credit if pursuing the Landscape Management major.
