Associate Degree of Mine Operations Management (Specialisation)
ObjectivesThis program aims to provide an integrated education pathway into underground or surface coal mine management. The program incorporates university engineering management and safety, science courses and (dependent on specialisation) statutory black coal competencies. The four year part-time program is designed to develop the skills and knowledge to meet the needs of underground or surface coal mine management. This program has generic, management and technical components that will enable graduates to contribute to and participate in underground or surface coal mine management, depending on the specialisation studied.
Entry requirementsPrerequisites - All students are required to be employed in the mining industry, in work appropriate to their course of study.
Academic titleAssociate Degree of Mine Operations Management (Specialisation)
Course description
About Mines Operation Management
Queensland has vast resources of minerals and energy. There are bands of coal rich strata from Collinsville in the north to Milmerran in the south. Queensland is Australia’s largest producer of coal and Australia is the largest exporter of coal in the world. Growth in the minerals industry needs people with technical skills to develop and operate mines in a safe and environmentally sensitive manner.
Career Opportunities
Graduates would be expected to find employment in underground or surface coal mines (depending on specialisation) throughout Australia.
For students studying the underground specialisation, the University courses plus the black coal competencies in this program are aimed to meet the educational prerequisites to be eligible to sit for the examination of the Board of Examiners for the First Class Mine Manager’s Certificate of Competency (Underground Coal Mines, Queensland).
For students studying the surface specialisation, the black coal competencies in this program are aimed to assist Site Senior Executives in ensuring mines have persons with appropriate competencies to manage mines safely and efficiently.
Program Structure
96 units of credit
This program is aimed at the education of mining operations management in one of two specialisations:
* underground coal; and
* surface coal.
This program is only available for external part-time study.
All students enrol in a common first year and then select a specialisation.
Year 1
The below program structure is valid for students commencing this program in 2008. For continuing students who entered the program prior to 2006, please refer to the Transition documentation.
All students enrol in a common first year and then select a specialist stream. In the first year of study students complete:
