The Bachelor of Applied Science (Wine Science) / Bachelor of Applied Science (Viticulture) double degree is designed to develop knowledge and skills in winemaking, wine science, viticulture, vine physiology, wine appraisal, soil science and water management.
Students can complete their studies while working in the wine industry or by interchanging full-time study with distance education.
Where it will take you
Graduates are employed as winemakers in Australia and overseas. They may also be employed in quality control, technical, research and management positions in the wine, brewing and food processing industries.

The latest facilities
To make sure you gain experience with equipment and techniques found in the workplace, our facilities include:
* modern laboratory facilities equipped with state-of-the-art equipment
* a fully operational modern commercial winery with 12ha of vineyard, processing about 300 tonnes of fruit per annum and producing award winning wines
* an experimental winery for student use
* a teaching vineyard for student use
Practical experience
Students enrol in a wine industry experience subject which is fulfilled by working at commercial wineries and vineyards. This can include work at the University’s commercial winery and vineyard.
Residential school
Distance education students are required to attend residential schools at the University. These schools provide intensive teaching on the practical aspects of the course. Generally, the schools take three, four or five days per subject. Residential schools for Autumn session subjects are held in June/July to avoid industry vintage work clashes.
Distance education students working in New Zealand may in some instances be able to attend practical sessions at the Eastern Institute of Technology. There may be a fee payable to the Eastern Institute of Technology for this option.
Science Scholarships
CSU's Science Scholarships are available for on campus applicants to this course, providing $4000 per annum for up to four years (subject to satisfactory progress). Once awarded the Scholarship, the money is the student's to spend in the way that assists them most.
Applicants must achieve a University Admissions Index (UAI)(NSW) or ENTER(VIC) of 80 and above (inclusive of the Regional Bonus) to be eligible to receive the Scholarship.
To apply, download the Science Scholarships application form, complete all sections, then return the form to the Scholarships Officer before the end of October in the year prior to commencing your studies.
Graduation requirements
To graduate, students must satisfactorily complete 232 points (29 subjects) and a 0-point wine industry experience subject. Students must achieve a basic level of wine sensory skill.
Upon completion of the program, students graduate with two awards, the Bachelor of Applied Science (Wine Science) and the Bachelor of Applied Science (Viticulture).

Should you wish to further your study, opportunities for professional development include an Honours degree and progression through the Graduate Diploma of Applied Science (Agricultural Studies), Master of Applied Science and Doctor of Philosophy.
