Bachelor of Arts (Communication and Cultural Studies)

  • Objectives Do you want to develop a broad range of critical thinking, research and communication knowledge and skills? Do you want a broad range of career options open to you upon graduation? If you know how meanings are made and circulated in a culture and how that relates to the way in which social and political powers operate, you better understand how you are positioned in a cultural structure and can use that knowledge to your advantage. This course focuses on the theory and practice of communication and society’s representation of itself in a variety of media and other cultural forms. Through the course, you will gain a substantial grounding in the production, publishing, analysis and criticism of print and non-print texts, performance and creative production, as well as an in-depth understanding of modern culture. You will acquire a critical intellectual development through rigorous thinking and thoughtful reading. Both theoretical and practical subjects are offered in this course. You can choose to specialise in Creative Writing, Literary and Cultural Studies, Performance Studies or Professional Writing and Publishing, or in a combination of these areas. You can also choose to undertake subjects taught in other areas of the University, such as film and television, journalism, marketing, multimedia and public relations.
