ObjectivesDesign is about solving problems and making things communicate, stimulate, entertain, enlighten and look good. This course encourages creativity, versatility, depth of knowledge and research, supported by strong visual presentation and communication skills. The common first year is highly multidisciplinary, allowing you to identify your special skills and interests through exploration of a wide range of activities. You will undertake creative studio activities and be introduced to the technological knowledge and skill base of design. Important introductory studies in the contextual, theoretical and historical aspects of design are also covered. In your second and third years, you will follow your chief design interest by specialising in one of the following: Creative Advertising Design; Design Photography; Graphic Design; Illustration; or Product and Furniture Design.

Introduction
This course is structured to allow students to identify individual special skills and interests during the first year, by engaging in a wide range of design experiences covering the major fields of design practice. From second year the students choose one major and learn detailed, specific skills in their chosen field. Majors offered in this degree are Graphic Design, Creative Advertising Design, Illustration, Design Photography and Product and Furniture Design.
Course Entry Requirements/Prerequisites
Standard Curtin University entry requirements. All applicants are required to sit an interview and portfolio review. TISC applicants will receive an invitation to interview in November using the mailing address registered with TISC. Interviews are held in late November and early December. Potential students are required to bring a folio of work to the interview. For further information, contact Humanities Future Students.

Note
Alternative pathways are available for mature age students. Applicants may be required to present to the Department a comprehensive folio of work and attend a personal interview with the teaching staff.
Recognition of Prior Learning
Applications for recognition of prior learning are assessed on an individual basis. TISC applicants seeking recognition of prior learning may be required to present a folio and be interviewed. International student's recognition of prior learning is based on a folio on disc and a record of previous study to be submitted along with the international application.

Three years full-time study or equivalent part-time.
Course Organisation
The common first year is multidisciplinary in order that students, new to design programs at this level, are able to achieve a conceptual view of what constitutes design process and product. In addition to creative studio activities, students are introduced to the technological knowledge and skill base of design and they undertake important introductory studies in this contextual, theoretical and historical aspects. In second and third year, students follow their chief design interest by undertaking a major, for example those wishing to undertake the Furniture Design major complete the common first year of the Bachelor of Arts (Design) and then undertake the Furniture Design major.
Professional Recognition
Graduates may convert student membership to the national professional design bodies into full professional membership after fulfilling specific conditions.
Additional Course Expenses
Students may be expected to purchase a number of textbooks, readers and other essential study materials. All students are also required to own or have access to a 35mm single-lens reflex camera, either fully manual, or automatic with manual override. The Department strongly recommends that students have access to a computer with software relevant to requirements of the course.
