Bachelor of Education (Primary) (Fourth Year Upgrade)

  • Objectives This course was introduced by the Faculty of Education because of the need for professional development of two or three-year trained teachers. This provides the opportunity for two or three-year trained graduates from this and other universities to upgrade their Diploma or Bachelor of Teaching qualifications to a Bachelor of Education. It builds upon students’ previous studies in teacher education and is able to supplement their earlier study in ways which can meet employer requirements for a fourth year of teacher education as a pre-requisite for continuing registration as a teacher. Further, the course aims to provide currency for teachers who have experienced lengthy periods of absence from the profession and who wish to re-enter it.
  • Entry requirements Prerequisites Completion of a pre-service course of teacher education of at least two years' duration
  • Academic title Bachelor of Education (Primary) (Fourth Year Upgrade)
  • Course description Students who complete fours units of this course may exit the degree with the Graduate Certificate in Professional Development.

    To qualify for the degree, a student must complete the following:

    1. For students who have completed a three-year pre-service course of teacher education, upgrading to the Bachelor of Education (Primary)
             1. 80 cp from the Schedule of Unit Offerings.
      
    2. For students who have completed a three-year pre-service course of teacher education, upgrading to the Bachelor of Education (Secondary)
          80 cp from Part B of the Schedule of Unit Offerings, consisting of:
             1. 20 cp from Core units;
             2. 20 cp from Discipline Study electives;
             3. 20 cp from Education electives;
             4. 20 cp from other Electives.
      
    3. For students who have completed a two-year pre-service course of teacher education
          120 cp from Part A or Part B of the Schedule of Unit Offerings, consisting of:
             1. 10 cp from Core units;
             2. 110 cp from Electives, normally including 20 cp from Education Studies units.

    English Language Requirements

    IELTS 7.0

    Teacher registration requires students to meet the English language requirements in their state. It is the student’s responsibility to develop their English language skills during their candidature to ensure that they meet the registration guidelines, which usually require a score of at least 7.0 in each of the IELTS bands.
