Bachelor of Engineering (Electronic and Communication Engineering)

  • Objectives Electrical and communication engineering involves analogue and digital communication systems, information processing, telecommunications and computer communication networks, signal and image processing, control and instrumentation, as well as electronic design. Modern computing is predominantly distributed. It involves an interaction of network-connected processors, so that computing and networking are inextricably linked. As a communications engineer you will be concerned with the design of such networks and consider all hardware, software and firmware functions. You will be involved in the implementation of protocols for the transmission of data, the detection and correction of transmission errors, the sharing of communication capacity on high-speed media, and the routing of data to specific destinations within a network. The first two years of this course are studied alongside students studying computer systems or electrical power engineering. You will specialise in electronic and communication engineering from third year. Prior to graduation, you will complete at least 12 weeks of engineering work experience during your vacations. This professional practice will be undertaken while you are still a student to make your theoretical studies more meaningful.
  • Entry requirements TEE Applicable Mathematics plus at least two of TEE Calculus, Chemistry and Physics. Well-performed candidates without one of the prerequisite subjects may be accepted and required to undertake an additional program of preparatory studies.
  • Academic title Bachelor of Engineering (Electronic and Communication Engineering)
  • Course description Bachelor of Engineering (Electronic and Communication Engineering)

    BEng(Curtin) OR BEng(Hons)(Curtin)

    Course CRICOS Code: 052795G
Registered full-time Duration for International Onshore Students on student visas: 4 Years

    Introduction

This course requires a minimum of eight semesters of full-time study. The first four semesters are studied in common with all students. In the fifth semester, students commence specialisation in Electronic and Communication Engineering. The electronics and communication fields represent two of the fastest growing technology areas both in Australia and internationally and job opportunities in these fields abound. With the rapid progress of the information society, the role of communications is becoming even more crucial to increased industry efficiency and competitiveness. The reason lies in the decentralisation of computing power in both the office and factory environment and the ability of specialised communication networks to link all geographically and spatially separated elements. Most of us are familiar with the everyday agents of change in the electronics and communication driven revolution. These include transaction processing at banks and 'point of sale' supermarket outlets, electronic funds transfer, electronic mail, electronically automated booking systems for airlines and theatrical or sporting events, office and factory automation, together with intelligent home appliances.

    Specific Requirements

STAT is not accepted for mature age entry to this course, but may be used to demonstrate English Competence requirements.

    Note
In certain cases, the need to complete these special units may result in extension of studies beyond the regular four year term. Students with other, or equivalent, qualifications should direct enquiries to the Head of the Department.

    Recognition of Prior Learning

Applications for recognition of prior learning are assessed on an individual basis.

    Duration and Availability

    4 years' full-time study or part-time equivalent.

    Course Organisation

Students undertake the Bachelor of Engineering Pre-Major in the first year and on successful completion proceed to the second year of an engineering discipline. Please refer to the section at the front of the Department of First Year Engineering Studiesto obtain details about the Bachelor of Engineering Pre-Major.

    Professional Recognition

The Bachelor of Engineering (Electronic and Communication Engineering) has been accorded full recognition by Engineers Australia, exempting graduates from all academic requirements for Corporate Membership. To qualify for the grade of Corporate Member ofEngineers Australia, a graduate also requires a minimum of four years approved experience following the award of the Bachelor of Engineering degree. All degree courses are also recognised by various overseas professional institutions. Further information regarding membership of professional institutions can be obtained from the School of Engineering or from the Secretary, Engineers Australia, Western Australia Division.

    Additional Course Expenses
Students may be expected to purchase a number of textbooks, readers and other essential study materials.
