  • Objectives The Bachelor of Nursing/Bachelor of Paramedicine course aims to develop a proactive and adaptable graduate who, at a beginning level, will be a competent, ethical clinician, a creative and critical thinker, an independent lifelong learner and a professional nurse/paramedic. Graduates will be eligible to apply for registration as a Division 1 nurse in the State of Victoria and work as an accredited paramedic.
  • Entry requirements Queensland Prerequisites: English (4, SA). Victoria Prerequisites: Units 3 and 4 - a study score of at least 30 in English (ESL) or 25 in any other English. * Eligibility for nurse registration within Australia is an accepted alternative entry qualification. * Students must have a current accredited CPR Certificate prior to undertaking clinical practice. Appropriate immunisation is also required.

  • Course description There are five strands within the curriculum: Nursing Foundations, Applied Science for Practice, Contexts of Nursing, Clinical Nursing Practice and Paramedicine. There is vertical and horizontal integration within and between units in the strands. An outline of each strand follows.

    Nursing Foundations

    This strand of study provides social and humanistic knowledge and frameworks that underpin and inform professional nursing practice. Knowledge applications from a range of disciplines and philosophies are integrated to develop an understanding and appreciation of the discipline of nursing and the complexity of health care. Disciplines and philosophies include ethics, theology, law, psychology, sociology, communication theory, information technology, leadership and research. This strand comprises six units.

    Applied Science for Practice

    This strand of study provides the bioscience knowledge and frameworks that complement Nursing Foundations and support Contexts of Nursing units. Knowledge applications from a range of disciplines are integrated to develop understanding and appreciation of clinical practice. The disciplines include anatomy, physiology, microbiology, physical sciences, pathology and pharmacology. This strand comprises five units.

    Contexts of Nursing

    The units in this strand articulate integration of knowledge to inform the scope of practice. This strand prepares the student with necessary knowledge, skills and attitudes to act in the role of nurse in a variety of nursing contexts. Students will develop practice knowledge to provide holistic care across the lifespan. Contexts of Nursing units acknowledge multiple meanings of health and illness influenced by a multicultural society. This strand comprises six units, one offered each semester of the course.

    Clinical Nursing Practice

    This strand of study facilitates experience in the application of theory to practice and the development of clinical skills, knowledge and competencies. It is informed by other strands within the curriculum. Six units are dedicated to nursing practice in a variety of health care environments.

    Paramedicine

    This strand of study provides the paramedicine knowledge and frameworks to inform the scope of practice of paramedics. The strand provides the student with the necessary knowledge, skills and attitudes to work in the role of the paramedic in a variety of settings. This strand comprises nine units. See Appendix B for specific paramedic skills lists.

    EFTSL value of units: All 10cp units in this course have an EFTSL value of 0.125. Units with a cp value of a multiple of 10 have corresponding EFTSL values.

    1.Requirements for Completion of the Degrees

    To qualify the degree, a student must complete 320 cp from the Schedule of Unit Offerings, consisting of:

       1. 60 cp from the Nursing Foundation Strand;
       2. 50 cp from the Applied Science for Practice Strand;
       3. 60 cp from the Contexts of Nursing Strand;
       4. 60 cp from the Clinical Nursing Practice Strand; and
       5. 90 cp from the Paramedicine Strand.

    2.Requirements for Completion of the Honours Degree

    A student may qualify for the Bachelor of Nursing (Honours)/Bachelor of Paramedicine degree by satisfying the additional Honours requirements set out in the rules for Honours in the Bachelor of Nursing degree.

    3.Progression within the Course

    Students normally complete a unit or units at an introductory level (100-level) in an approved sequence before undertaking advanced level units (200 or 300-level) in that sequence.

    In all aspects of progress through the course, students will be advised by the Course Co-ordinator and bound by decisions of the School Committee.

    20Students are required to have a current Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Certificate from an accredited source prior to undertaking clinical practice. The currency of the certificate must be validated each year.
    21As nursing brings students into contact with various communicable diseases, it is a requirement of some facilities used for clinical experience that students have appropriate immunisation.
