Course descriptionStorytelling is one of the oldest and most respected of human endeavours. What we know of ourselves and others comes through the stories we tell. Throughout most of history we used the spoken word or drawings to tell stories.
With the advent of the camera came the phrase "A picture is worth a thousand words". Today's visual storytelling uses modern technology and techniques that allow us to understand aspects of ourselves such as love, hate, anger and desire and that cannot be conveyed through other media.
This program introduces you to the craft, politics and philosophy of such storytelling. Whether you seek to be a journalist, work in creative advertising or practise as a fine artist, the command of storytelling is fundamental to success in these areas. You will also explore the inter-relationship of photography and other forms of visual communication and develop the ability to recognise and produce meaningful visual statements.
In Year 1, your studies combine photographic courses, studio practice and art theory. Along with developing an understanding of the politics and philosophies that underpin photography, you will receive a thorough grounding in the practise of photography and in developing your conceptual and craft skills.
Comprising closely-related practical studio areas supported by appropriate visual arts theory, communication or business studies, this program provides specialised studies in the practices, politics, philosophies and ethics within the major study areas. In Years 2 and 3, you will concentrate on your major chosen from the following options:
Creative Advertising Photography
Photographic Art Practice
Photojournalism
Career opportunities
With a keen appreciation of the politics and philosophies underpinning the practise of photography and the motivation to work innovatively, you will be capable of working at a professional level in the creative and rewarding spheres of advertising and design, fine art and public art, news, photojournalism and documentary photography which can give you the opportunity to work anywhere in the world.
