Bachelor of Science (Environmental Science) (Honours)

  • Objectives Environmental science is concerned with the physical, chemical and biological conditions of the environment and their effect on organisms. In your first year you will be introduced to a broad range of scientific disciplines. In later years you will be given the opportunity to develop your expertise in specific areas - chemistry, environmental biology, geology, mathematics or physics. During this course you will learn to use state-of-the-art computer software, and acquire an understanding of the principles of economics, environmental policy development, impact assessment and management. In your fourth year you will undertake an honours research project and gain experience as a member of multidisciplinary research groups.
  • Entry requirements TEE Applicable Mathematics. TEE Chemistry is required to specialise in chemistry. TEE Physics is required to specialise in physics.TEE Calculus is desirable for those wishing to specialise in mathematics or physics. Applicants who do not meet the chemistry prerequisite will be given separate consideration.

    Introduction

Students are introduced to a broad range of scientific disciplines in the first year of the course. In later years, they are given the opportunity to develop their expertise in specific areas - biology, chemistry, geology, mathematics or physics. Simultaneously, they develop their ability to use state of the art computer software, and acquire an understanding of the principles of economics, environmental policy development, impact assessment and management.

    Course Entry Requirements/Prerequisites

TEE Applicable Mathematics. Those wishing to major in the Physics or Chemistry streams must also have completed TEE Physics or TEE Chemistry respectively. TEE Calculus (for the Maths and Physics streams) is desirable depending upon area of specialisation. Note: students who do not meet Chemistry pre-requisite requirements will be given separate consideration.

    Specific Requirements

The STAT is not accepted for entry to this course.

    Recognition of Prior Learning

Applications for recognition of prior learning are assessed on an individual basis.

    Duration and Availability

This course is four years' full-time or equivalent part-time study.

    Intermediate Awards

A student who has successfully completed all the requirements of the Bachelor of Science may apply under exceptional circumstance provisions for graduation in the Bachelor of Science subject to approval of the course coordinator. A student who has not met the University honours entrance requirements at the end of the third year will be awarded the Bachelor of Science.

    Professional Recognition

Depending upon the major area of study chosen, graduates will be eligible for membership of the Australian Institute of Biology, Royal Australian Chemical Institute, Institute of Geoscientists, Australian Mathematics Society or Australian Institute of Physics.

    Career Opportunities

Graduates may find employment in environmental departments of government agencies and industry concerned with natural resources, land care and restoration, as well as with the traditional private employers of environmental scientists and managers.

    Additional Course Expenses
Students may be expected to purchase a number of textbooks, readers and other essential study materials.
