ObjectivesThis course is designed for people interested in gaining an apprenticeship in the construction area. It consists of three specialist streams: Bricklaying, Carpentry and Painting & Decorating.
Entry requirementsThere are no prerequisites for these courses, however you must have a genuine desire to enter the construction industry and/or start an apprenticeship. You should enjoy working outdoors, be comfortable working at heights and have the ability to complete the physical tasks involved in the construction industry.

Course descriptionKey Study Areas
There are 11 common modules covering areas such as:
* Hand and power tools
* Structures and buildings
* Workplace communications
* Occupational health and safety
* Reading and interpreting plans
* Scaffolding
In addition specialist modules are then delivered according to whichever of the three streams has been selected.

Successful completion of this course will enhance your ability to apply for an apprenticeship position in General Construction. Upon completing an apprenticeship in a specific industry stream you will be qualified to work in a variety of roles:
Carpentry Stream - working across the range from small residential builders, through to construction work for medium to large scale companies constructing substantial buildings such as hospitals, office buildings and schools.
Bricklaying Stream - work on residential housing through to larger industrial jobs, in heritage or in other specialised areas.
Painting & Decorating - work on residential, maintenance, commercial or specialised restoration work.
After several years of experience, you may become involved in drafting or estimating, or become a registered builder.
A Certificate III in General Construction Apprenticeship normally runs for 4 years, but successfully completing this pre-apprenticeship course will reduce that to 3.5 years, meaning tradesperson wages will come 6 months earlier.
Several leading local registered builders began their careers completing pre-apprentice courses. They recognised that this course is a useful head start in a variety of careers and give preference to apprenticeship applicants who have successfully completed this course.
Further Study Options
If you wish to further your study you may choose to apply for enrolment in courses such as AutoCAD, Certificate IV in Domestic Building Management, Certificate IV in Residential Drafting or the Diploma of Building Design and Technology.
Recognition of your current qualifications and prior learning: BRIT has processes to give you credit for relevant units from your prior study, and to assess your prior learning against units in a course.
