Graduate Certificate in Mathematics

  • Objectives The four units in this course provide a mathematical mirror at tertiary level. The course will prepare teachers to teach year 11 and 12 mathematics in NSW secondary schools.
  • Entry requirements Prerequisites 1. Four year degree in Education; or 2. a degree in an area other than Education and a Graduate Diploma in education or equivalent; and 3. at least one year's experience teaching mathematics at secondary level.

  • Course description The course aims to:

    1. develop in students an understanding and appreciation of the ways of thinking, modes of enquiry and language of the discipline of mathematics;
      
    2. develop theoretical insights and practical competencies in fundamental areas of mathematics;
      
    3. prepare graduates with the necessary knowledge and skills to teach year 11 and 12 Mathematics and Extension 1 effectively;
      
    4. prepare graduates who are confident and enthusiastic about the teaching of the discipline of mathematics.

    EFTSL value of units: All 10 cp units in this course have an EFTSL value of 0.125. Units with a cp value of a multiple of 10 have corresponding EFTSL values.

    1 Requirements for Completion of the Graduate Certificate

    To qualify for the Graduate Certificate, a student must complete 40 cp from the Schedule of Unit Offerings, consisting of:

       1. 30 cp from Core Units; and
       2. 10 cp from Electives.
