  • Course description The Graduate Certificate in Teaching English as a Second Language is an 18-unit program of study designed to be completed in one semester of full-time study, or the equivalent part-time study.

The course is offered by the Faculty of Education, Humanities, Law and Theology on a Commonwealth Supported basis.

A key aspect of the Graduate Certificate in Teaching English as a Second Language (TESOL) is the flexibility of its delivery. It may be studied full-time or part-time within the University's semester structure and, where cohorts of students from a particular institution are involved simultaneously, it may be studied in intensive mode. The length of the intensive mode is at least 4 weeks, with topics being offered concurrently. This constitutes full-time study for the duration of the intensive structure.

It is aimed at the development of skills in the area of teaching English to speakers of other languages (TESOL).

The Graduate Certificate TESOL is designed for the following groups:

        * graduates who do not have a formal teaching qualification and wish to teach English as a second language
        * qualified teachers who require specialised knowledge in TESOL
        * qualified teachers of other subjects, which are taught using English (as the language for instruction) as a second language.

Students taking the program will explore current theories in second language teaching, investigate classroom issues related to teaching TESOL and critique second language teaching methodologies. On completion of the program students will be able to:

        * describe current teaching theories in second language acquisition
        * identify issues related to teaching in a second language
        * articulate and implement second language teaching methodologies.

Students who have completed Professional Development Pathways Modules through the Department of Education and Children's Services (DECS) may be eligible to receive credit transfer in the Graduate Certificate in Teaching English as a Second Language.
