Graduate Diploma in Forensic Science (DNA Technology)
ObjectivesThe course is designed for students who hold a degree in biology or chemistry. Students will focus on the study of the methods of molecular biology, in particular as applied to the use of DNA technology in forensic science, the theoretical basis of those methods, their limitations and application to specific problems in forensic science. Learning outcomes Students will acquire the skills to: * perform laboratory procedures in forensic DNA techniques and maintain records to the exacting standards required for court admissible evidence; and * understand the theoretical basis of DNA technology to enable them to keep abreast of new techniques as they become part of forensic DNA practice; and defend the veracity of their work when cross-examined in court.
Entry requirementsApplicants must normally hold an approved degree or equivalent qualification from an approved tertiary institution which includes a major in biology or chemistry. However, applicants may be admitted if they hold a degree (or equivalent) in another discipline and have experience in forensic science or DNA technology which the Faculty Board deems appropriate. The Board also may, under certain circumstances and subject to specific conditions, admit others who can show evidence of fitness for candidature. Credit may be granted, on application, for comparable prior studies.

Course descriptionThis course focuses on methods of molecular biology, in particular as applied to the use of DNA technology in forensic science, the theoretical basis of those methods, and their limitations and applications to specific problems in forensic science.
Students gain an understanding of the basic scientific concepts relevant to DNA technology. They also receive basic training in a range of field, laboratory and computational methods, as well as learning communication skills and problem-based and critical thinking skills.
Graduates will acquire the skills to perform laboratory procedures in forensic DNA techniques and maintain records to the exacting standards required for court-admissible evidence. They will also understand the theoretical basis of DNA technology to enable them to keep abreast of new techniques as they become part of DNA forensic practice. When cross-examined in court these graduates will also have the clear confidence in their techniques and record keeping to defend the veracity of their work.

To qualify for the Graduate Diploma in Forensic Science (DNA Technology), a student must complete 36 units with a grade of P or NGP or better in each topic, according to the following program of study:

A 6-unit topic covering DNA properties, function and manipulation may be available. Further information regarding this topic may be obtained from the course coordinator.
Except with permission of the Faculty Board, the program must be completed full-time in two consecutive semesters or part-time within four consecutive semesters.
