Graduate Diploma of Language

Graduate Diploma of Language

  • Objectives The Graduate Certificate and Diploma of Language will be of interest to students for whom a systematic study of language is desirable in addition to their primary course of study. As language units must be studied sequentially the award will be completed part-time in up to three years, with students taking one language unit per trimester. In-country options The option exists to undertake second or third year units in-country over trimester 3. The six week programs are held in Tunisia (Arabic), China (Chinese) and Indonesia or Malaysia (Indonesian). In addition to giving students language skills, participation in the program is a rare opportunity to use the language with native speakers in its natural environment while studying it formally in a more structured classroom context. In addition, since the in-country units are equivalent to one trimester or one year, they could potentially shorten the completion time of the Certificate or Diploma.
  • Entry requirements To be eligible for admission into the Graduate Diploma of Language applicants require: * a bachelor degree from an approved tertiary institution; or * qualifications deemed to be equivalent
  • Academic title Graduate Diploma of Language
  • Course description Fees and charges
Equivalent Full Time Student Load (EFTSL)
EFTSL is the standard annual full time load. Eight credit points is the standard full time load for one year of study.

Fee paying place - Domestic (DFP)
A Fee paying place is one for which the university does not receive any government funding. As such, students enrolled in these places are required to contribute the full cost of their course.
Fee paying places are available to domestic students. Domestic students are those who are Australian citizens, New Zealand citizens or holders of a permanent visa.

    * The 'indicative annual course fee' cited has been provided as a guide only. It has been calculated on the basis of a typical enrolment of a student undertaking the course in 2009, and reflects the cost involved in undertaking a full-time quota of units within the specified discipline.
The actual fees charged by Deakin University will depend upon the discipline from which each individual unit is chosen, and may vary from the indicative course fee cited, particularly if units are chosen from a number of disciplines. The cost of each unit offered in 2009 can be viewed at  http://www.deakin.edu.au/current-students/handbooks2009/search.php .
Please note that the fees per unit/credit point may increase annually due to rises in the cost of course delivery and service.
Deakin assumes no responsibility for persons relying on 'indicative course fees' to calculate the total future cost of their course.

    Career opportunities
This course will allow you to work in business or trade, health or education, IT or engineering, diplomacy or security and arts or sciences. A Certificate or Diploma of Language will equip you with skills in another language and familiarity with another culture. This will not only give you an edge in terms of your personal qualities but will also expand your options for employment far beyond Australian shores to exciting and challenging positions in the Arab Gulf States; the Middle East and North Africa; China, Taiwan and Hong Kong; or Malaysia and Indonesia.
