Graduate Diploma of Learning and Teaching

  • Objectives Graduates of the Graduate Diploma of Learning and Teaching will be workplace and future orientated, as such will have the demonstrated capacity to enhance workplace capability and a clear focus on designing pedagogical strategies to achieve learning. Graduates will have knowledge and skills in the use of Dimensions of Learning Instructional Framework. The specific professional standards that graduates will demonstrate by direct, indirect and supplementary evidence is derived from the Queensland College of Teachers Professional Standards for Queensland Teachers. Students will be required to complete extensive Embedded Professional Learning which will consist of three days per week placement over school terms 2 and 3, plus a 6 week Internship over the first six weeks of school’s term four for five days per week. Graduates will be eligible to teach in one of the following educational or workplace settings based on the completion of the Embedded Professional Learning and Internship within that setting: - Primary School (Years 1 - 7) - Secondary School (Years 8 - 12)
  • Practical experience 56 days of Embedded Professional Learning to be completed over three days per week over school terms 2 and 3 plus a six week graduate internship over the first six weeks of school term 4.
  • Entry requirements To be eligible for entry into the GDLT all applicants must have completed a three (3) year Bachelor degree or equivalent from a university or college. Applicants with degrees completed overseas must provide evidence to support the qualifications equivalent to an Australian three-year Bachelor degree. Applicants who cannot demonstrate they have completed a Bachelor degree will be refused entry to the program. The GPA within the Bachelor degree must be at least 4.0. Please note: Applicants with undergraduate degrees that were obtained ten or more years ago will need to supply certified evidence of current relevant professional work experience in the area of their speciality eg. letters from employers. This experience must link to their previous undergraduate study. Applicants must demonstrate the capacity to undertake the degree by meeting the following entry criteria for the teaching focus in which they wish to specialise: Primary Focus (Years 1 - 7) A three (3) year undergraduate degree or equivalent from a university or college. Secondary Focus (Years 8-12) A three (3) year undergraduate degree or equivalent from a university or college that demonstrates sufficient knowledge development in two teaching areas. A teaching area consists of 6 or more courses (subjects) studied within the applicants undergraduate degree. International Applicants In addition to the academic prerequisites listed above, international applicants are required to have an acceptable level of competency in writing, reading, speaking and understanding English that is equivalent to a score of 6 in each area of IIELTS (academic). This program can only be studied within Australia. Written Statement All applicants must provide a written statement with their application which includes the following: * State their chosen teaching focus: Primary (Years 1 - 7) or Secondary (Years 8 - 12) and state why they have chosen this teaching focus. * State reasons for choosing teaching as a career as well as listing any previous teaching experience or lead learning in the workplace. * If choosing a Primary focus, indicate who their undergraduate study applies to the 8 Key Learning areas. * If choosing a Secondary focus, indicate the two teaching areas in which they intend to specialise how these teaching areas link with their previous undergraduate studies. ie. listing the previously studied courses that link with their anticipated teaching areas (6 courses minimum per teaching area). Computer requirements It is a requirement of enrolment in this program that all students have access to the CQUniversity website via the Internet. Students will be required to undertake various components of study in the program using email and the Internet. Residential schools There are three compulsory residential schools which are mandatory for this program. These residential schools will only be held at CQUniversity Rockhampton with the first being scheduled for Orientation Week. Residential School 1 - Orientation to Program - Monday, 23 to Thursday, 26 February (inclusive) 4 days; Residential School 2 - Mid-program - Monday, 29 June to Wednesday, 1 July (inclusive) 3 days; and Residential School 3 - Pre-Internship - Monday, 21 to Wednesday, 23 September (inclusive) 3 days. Note: Part-time students commencing in 2009 must attend: * Residential School 1: Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday; * Residential School 2: Monday and Tuesday morning; * Residential School 3: do not need to attend in first year of study. Part-time students who are in their second year in 2009 must attend: * Residential School 1: Thursday only; * Residential School 2: Tuesday and Wednesday; * Residential School 3: Monday 21 to Wednesday 23 September (inclusive) 3 days In school placement Placement arrangements for full-time students: School term 2 - 32 days (3 days per week for 11 weeks) School term 3 - 24 days (3 days per week for 8 weeks) School term 4 - 30 day internship (5 days per week for 6 weeks) Placement arrangements for part-time students: Year 1 of study: School term 2 - 16 days School term 3 - 16 days Year 2 of study: School term 2 - 16 days School term 3 - 8 days School term 4 - 30 day internship (5 days per week for 6 weeks)

    About graduate entry studies

    The Graduate Diploma of Learning and Teaching program is a postgraduate pre-service teacher education preparation program for graduates with an undergraduate degree to obtain their first teaching qualification. Graduates will be eligible to apply for registration with the Queensland College of Teachers.

    Graduates of this program will be workplace ready and futures oriented.  As such they will have the demonstrated workplace capability and a clear focus on designing pedagogical strategies to achieve learning.  Graduates will also have skills in the use of the dimensions of learning instructional framework.  The specific professional standards that graduates will demonstrate by direct, indirect and supplementary evidence are derived from the Queensland College of Teachers Professional Standards for Queensland Teachers.

    There are three compulsory residential workshops which are mandatory for this program.  These residential schools will only be held on the Rockhampton Campus with the first being scheduled in Orientation Week.

    Residential school dates for 2009 are as follows:

        * 23 to 26 February (inclusive);
        * 29 June to 1 July (inclusive);
        * 21 to 23 September (inclusive).

    Note: It is a requirement of the Commission for Children and Young People that all university students and other volunteers in schools undergo a criminal history check.  Therefore it will be necessary for all commencing students to apply for a ‘Suitability Blue Card’ through a nominated person at each campus.  Students must be in possession of a Positive Notice Suitability Blue Card prior to beginning any in-school work.  The ‘Suitability Blue Card’ remains current for two years.  Students must apply for their 'Suitability Blue Card' upon accepting an offer to study within the program.


    Career Opportunities

    The Graduate Diploma of Learning and Teaching program is a pre-service teacher education program for graduates who aim to pursue a career in teaching (Primary or Secondary).  Formal teacher registration is afforded of graduates by the Queensland College of Teachers who complete all program requirements including 56 days of Embedded Professional Learning plus a six week internship in a school setting.


    Program Structure

    To be eligible to graduate with the Graduate Diploma of Learning and Teaching degree, students must complete a total of 48 units of credit (equivalent to 8 x 6 units of credit postgraduate courses).

     Students must attend the three compulsory residential schools (10 days in total).
