Master of Architecture

  • Entry requirements Entry into the Master of Architecture program is competitive, based on academic merit, and subject to quota.

    Entry requires successful completion of the Bachelor of Architectural Studies program at the University of South Australia with a minimum Grade Point Average (GPA) of 4.0, or an approved equivalent program and GPA including either:

    * A Bachelor degree in a 3 year pre-professional architecture program from a recognised higher education institution or equivalent, or
    * A completed Graduate Diploma in Architecture from a recognised higher education institution.

    In addition, international students who speak English as a foreign language must have obtained one of the following standards within the last two years prior to admission:

    * English Language Test (see Note 1)
    o IELTS (International English Language Testing System)
    + Reading and writing - 6.0
    + Overall band score - 6.5
    o CPE (Certificate of Proficiency in English) (University of Cambridge ESOL examination)
    + Grade of C
    o CAE (Certificate in Advanced English) (University of Cambridge ESOL examination)
    + Grade of B
    o TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language)
    + TOEFL iBT (internet based test) - 90 with no band less than 21
    + TOEFL PBT (paper based test) - 577 with TWE (test of written English) of 4.5
    * English Language Programs
    o Successful completion of the CELUSA Academic English Program - Level 5
    * Other qualifications
    o Successful completion of a tertiary qualification at diploma level or above completed in Australia within the last two years; or
    o Successful completion of at least two years of tertiary study at diploma level or above conducted and completed in English within the last five years in a country in which English is commonly used, as determined by the University (see Note 2). Where the study in English was more than five years ago, this requirement may be satisfied by subsequent and recent work experience of at least two years duration in a setting where English is the language of business subject to satisfactory evidence as determined by the University.

    Note 1: Results from IELTS, University of Cambridge ESOL examinations and TOEFL are valid for two years.
    Note 2: The University, through UniSA International, maintains a list of countries where English is commonly used and which would satisfy this criterion. This may include particular educational institutions within a given non-English speaking country where English is the language of instruction.
    Note 3: Where previous study/work experience was conducted in English, the application must be accompanied by certified documentation from the educational institution/employer certifying that the language of instruction/employment was English.

    Notes

       1. Electives are designed to extend and expand students' intellectual and professional abilities in core and cognate areas of the curriculum and to provide scope for individual development in particular areas of professional and academic interest. A selection of electives will be offered each year, depending on staff availability and student demand. Students enrolled in the Master of Architecture may select from the following list of electives, or as approved by the Program Director. Where these electives are also offered to Bachelor degree students, additional assessment criteria will apply to those students undertaking the elective as part of the Master of Architecture.

       2. Students intending to enrol in an advanced research degree are advised to select ARCH 4043 Architectural Research 1 and ARCH 4044 Architectural Research 2 as their electives.
       3. Students who have a Grade Point Average of 4.5 or more and wish to independently pursue a topic of interest not available in the electives offered in any one study period may choose the following course as either a research or project based individual elective with the approval of the Program Director:
          ARCH 3031 Advanced Independent Elective
       4. Each design studio will require students to demonstrate an ability to integrate all other subject areas of the program into the design process.
