Master of Design

  • Objectives In this course you will engage with current issues and debates topical to discussions of design, both within an academic context and within the media. You will learn case study writing methods, grounded theory, observation and information gathering techniques including interviewing. You will also research and produce a case study related to a specific area within a professional design specialism. You will develop knowledge of and skills in the collection, collation and reporting of research, before completing your own design project under the guidance of one of our experienced staff.
  • Entry requirements * A bachelor degree or equivalent with a background in design or a discipline relevant to design, with a course-weighted average of 65% or higher. Those with a course-weighted average of less than 65% require an additional two years’ vocational and/or professional experience; or * A diploma plus at least five years’ vocational and/or professional experience in a design related discipline; or * At least ten years’ vocational and/or professional experience in a design related discipline.

    Introduction

    This course is for individuals of outstanding ability and professional motivation with a passion for understanding design in a world of rapid cultural and technological change and consequent design application. It aims to enhance the skills and depth of understanding of the design professional through discussion, reflection and the production of original innovative design solutions. Comprehensive projects lead to a deeper understanding of a specialisation and offer the potential for identifying niche markets and new applications that are socially grounded. Importantly, the course encourages professional and personal development through investigative learning that is relevant and transferable to the circumstances of real organisations.

    Course Entry Requirements/Prerequisites

    Entry into the Master of Design course will be offered to those students who have achieved a Bachelor of Arts from Curtin or other equivalent tertiary institution and have achieved a course weighted average of not less than 65 per cent in at least the previous two semesters of equivalent full-time study. A Bachelor of Arts (Design) and vocational/professional experience of a minimum of two years. A minimum of ten years vocational/professional experience in a design-related discipline. Students who have achieved a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) from Curtin or other equivalent tertiary institutions would enter into semester two of the Master of Design course.

    Recognition of Prior Learning

    Applications for recognition of prior learning are assessed on an individual basis.

    Duration and Availability

    This fee-paying course is three semesters full-time or equivalent part-time study.

    Intermediate Awards 1

    A student who has successfully completed the requirements of an approved intermediate award may apply for graduation in that award subject to approval of Head of School/Department. Fees apply. Intermediate award(s) approved for this course are:

    Course Organisation

    This course aims to broaden professional and vocational design skills and knowledge by engaging the student in professional design discourse and the undertaking of a design project, underpinned by design research methods and theory. Examples include live, or virtual exhibition, design schemas and models supported by a report, as well as a more conventional written dissertation. The course includes a combination of academically directed and individually inspired work, group activities and discussion. The course encourages professional and personal development through investigative learning that is relevant and transferable to the circumstances of real organisations.

    Professional Recognition

    Graduates are eligible for membership in the Australian Graphic Design Association, Perth Art Directors Club, Design Management Institute, and Design Institute of Australia.

    Career Opportunities

    Graduates of design generally find employment within all avenues of design, including design studios, advertising agencies, public relations and marketing organisations. Additionally the students research project can aid further in niche specialisation and self-employment.
