  • Objectives In this course you will complete one of four majors in professional inquiry, professional studies, training and development or visual arts. Professional inquiry This major will advance your skills in educational research and evaluation. You may choose your optional units to focus on one of four streams: educational leadership, learning technologies (with a design and development or implementation and evaluation theme), special education or teaching, learning and curriculum. Professional studies This major provides a generic program which will enhance your professional knowledge and skills in an educational context. You may choose your optional units to focus on one of four streams: educational leadership, learning technologies (with a design and development or implementation and evaluation theme), special education or teaching, learning and curriculum. Training and development This major is offered as a specialist in-service training to teachers and training professionals. It will enable you to pursue graduate studies in the field of training and development through coursework and investigation. Visual arts This major has been designed for teachers requiring advanced professional knowledge and skills in visual arts education.
  • Entry requirements A four-year degree in education combined with another area such as science, arts, languages, health sciences, nursing or business or equivalent, or a three-year bachelor degree in a non-education discipline plus a teaching qualification such as a Graduate Diploma in Education (Secondary Education). Other qualifications and backgrounds may constitute special consideration. Those considering the Training and Development major are required to hold a four-year Bachelor of Education or Bachelor of Arts (Education), vocational education and training plus a one-year Bachelor of Education Conversion Course, or a three-year Bachelor of Arts plus a Graduate Diploma in Education (Secondary Education). Applicants are normally expected to have at least one year of relevant professional experience in an educational or training capacity in an industry, educational or professional setting.

    Introduction

    This course is for those with a teacher education degree or equivalent. The rationale for this program is based on the demand for higher degrees that cater for teachers, educational administrators, university lecturers and industry-based development officers who wish to enhance professional knowledge and skills without the necessity of undertaking a research dissertation or thesis. Professional students intending to undertake doctoral level study are required to complete the Professional Inquiry major.

    Course Entry Requirements/Prerequisites

    For entry to the Master of Education a degree in teaching , a degree in education or their equivalent is required. The most common background for current entry is a first degree in education or teaching. A four-year combined education degree with another area such as science, arts, language, health sciences, nursing, or business is equivalent. Also a three-year degree in a non-education discipline, plus a teaching qualification such as a Diploma in Education is considered equivalent. Other qualifications and backgrounds may constitute special consideration by the Head of the Department of Education. For those considering the Training and Development Major applicants are required to hold a Bachelor of Education, Bachelor of Arts (Education) Vocational Education and Training, with a one-year Bachelor of Education Conversion course, Bachelor of Arts, plus a Diploma in Education.     Recognition of Prior Learning

    Applications for recognition of prior learning are assessed on an individual basis. Alternative formal professional development experiences such as courses, workshops and ongoing continuing education are considered when determining recognition of prior learning.

    Duration and Availability

    This course is one year full-time or equivalent part-time study and is available through flexible delivery on and off campus, including off-shore. Not all units are offered every semester and the availability of off-shore study cannot be assured for all units.

    A student who has successfully completed the requirements of an approved intermediate award may apply for graduation in that award subject to approval of Head of School/Department. Fees apply. Intermediate award(s) approved for this course are:
