Master of Engineering Management

  • Objectives This course is available to be taken full-time over one year or part-time over two years. If you are an international student, we recommend you consider the 16 month option which allows you to meet your visa requirements with a lower study load.
  • Entry requirements A bachelor of engineering or equivalent with a high aggregate, preferably with at least one year of relevant work experience since graduation.
  • Academic title Master of Engineering Management
  • Course description Many practising engineers find their careers moving increasingly towards engineering management. As your career progresses, you may find an increased need for engineering-oriented management skills. Today, due to the specific management requirements facing engineers progressing toward, or having attained, management responsibilities, a Master of Engineering Management is appreciated as a far more logical choice than a Master of Business Administration (MBA).

Our postgraduate courses in engineering management have been designed to meet the needs of engineering professionals who have had limited or no exposure to management topics in their first degree. They incorporate the engineering expertise of the Department of Civil Engineering with the business leadership of the Curtin Business School to provide you with management skills highly relevant to your engineering career. The units you take have been carefully chosen to cover the whole range of skills and competencies you need to undertake management tasks effectively.

Our Master of Engineering Management course is well regarded and internationally recognised. It has evolved over the past 16 years, keeping up with industry needs and trends, and the coursework is relevant to all engineering disciplines. Our graduates have an exceptional record in entrepreneurship, with a significant number occupying senior management positions in engineering and technology companies throughout the world.

    Introduction

An engineering management role is the long term function of many practising engineers. The need for engineering oriented management skills increases with career development. Many graduate engineers have received only an introduction to management topics at first degree level, some may have had none at all. Undergraduate management training should only be regarded as a base for enhancement of management skills by further advanced study. The Master of Engineering Management program provides a balance between engineering and business skills and is jointly taught by staff from the Department of Civil Engineering and the Curtin Business School in a format that integrates the functions and skills needed by engineers in management.

    Course Entry Requirements/Prerequisites

A bachelor of engineering or an equivalent qualification in a recognised discipline of engineering with a high aggregate, preferably with at least one year of relevant work experience since graduation.

    Specific Requirements

Practical engineering experience will be beneficial.

    Recognition of Prior Learning

Applications for recognition of prior learning are assessed on an individual basis. A student may, under specific circumstances, receive a waiver for a basic unit. In this case the student must substitute an alternative unit approved by the Head of Department. Equivalent units from other institutions may be acceptable if approved by the Head of Department or Course Coordinator.

    Duration and Availability

The course is of 12 months study in a full-time (three trimesters of 100 credits each ). Students holding an International Onshore Student Visa must complete the course in a full-time mode. For those students permitted to study on a part-time basis, (over a minimum period of 24 months), are required to undertake a minimum of two units per trimester (equivalent to the part-time program) and remain enrolled in consecutive years until the course has been satisfactorily completed. The Head of Department may grant leave of absence. Three intakes are offered each year in January, May and September.

    Career Opportunities

Graduates may find enhanced employment prospects with their original employer and with other organisations seeking experienced engineers with the skills to manage engineering technology.

    Additional Course Expenses
Students may be expected to purchase a number of textbooks, readers and other essential study materials.

    Course Structure Disclaimer
Curtin University reserves the right to alter the internal composition of any course to ensure learning outcomes retain maximum relevance. Any changes to the internal composition of a course will protect the right of students to complete the course within the normal timeframe and will not result in additional cost to students through a requirement to undertake additional units.
