Master of Social Work

  • Objectives The course is designed to provide a higher degree coursework masters award following a bachelors degree in social work or a bachelors degree with some social science component. The course aims to provide students with advanced skills in policy, research and practice.Learning outcomesStudents successfully completing this course are expected to be able to: * conceptualise and analyse social problems from the perspectives of social systems and structures, social policies, human development and behaviour, and social welfare service delivery; * provide professional social work practice with individuals, groups, families, communities and organisations; * advocate for disadvantaged members of society and work towards the elimination of social inequalities; * inquire into, and evaluate the nature of society and social problems, client populations, intervention methods, and practice outcomes; * reflect on, learn from, and continually develop their practice as life-long learners.
  • Entry requirements There are three different points of entry into the Master of Social Work: 1. Applicants who have completed a bachelors degree other than in social work are eligible to apply for entry to the Master of Social Work and if admitted they must complete the full 72 units of the course. 2. Applicants who have completed a recognised Bachelor of Social Work degree or a qualification deemed equivalent by the Faculty Board are eligible to apply for entry to the course. Such applicants may be granted up to 36 units of credit. 3. Applicants who have completed the first year of the Bachelor of Social Work at Flinders University at a standard approved by the Board or hold other qualifications deemed equivalent by the Board are eligible to apply for entry to the course. Such applicants may be granted up to 18 units of credit. After the first year of the Master of Social Work course such students will be eligible to be awarded the Bachelor of Social Work degree, but must surrender it on completion of the masters program.

  • Course description The Master of Social Work is a 72-unit program offered by the Faculty of Social Sciences on a fee-paying basis. This course can be studied externally.

    Graduates of the Master of Social Work are eligible to join the Australian Association of Social Workers.

    PROGRAM OF STUDY [November, 2008]

    To qualify for the Master of Social Work, a student must complete 72 units with a grade of P or NGP or better in each topic, according to the program of study below, unless granted credit for previous study.

    Not all topics are necessarily available in a given year.

    Should a compulsory topic be unavailable owing to exceptional circumstances, an alternative will be approved.

    There are three different programs of study depending on the point of entry, as outlined above.
