Victorian Certificate in Applied Learning (Foundation)

  • Objectives This course is for young people aged from 16 to 19, who are not at school and not working full time. VCAL Horticulture 2008: The course will include units from Certificate II in Horticulture (Landscaping) and units from VCAL. VCAL 2009: The course will include vocational taster units from other all departments of the Institute. It will include literacy and numeracy units to cater for all abilities, including young people who have learning needs through to young people who wish to study year 11 Foundation English.
  • Entry requirements There are no prerequisites for this course. Students will be assessed as to their literacy and numeracy level and classes established to suit their needs. Students need to be able to fit comfortably into the adult learning environment of BRIT. Other Entry Requirements For VCAL Horticulture in 2008, you must be prepared to work in all weather, have basic literacy and numeracy skills, be physically fit, and be highly motivated to complete the program. For VCAL programs in 2009, you must be prepared to involve yourself in planning your vocational pathway with the assistance of staff at BRIT, and engaging in all the opportunities available to you.

    You will study:

        * Literacy - based around your needs in the industry
        * Numeracy - based around industry needs
        * Work related skills - First Aid, OHS, community project
        * Industry specific skills - in 2008, units in Landscape from Certificate II in Horticulture. In 2009,  electives from all departments of the Institute will be offered to students.
        * Personal Development skills- project learning which develops your employability skills and assists you to identify your strengths.

    Employment Opportunities     

    VCAL Horticulture: This program will prepare the students for taking up a traineeship/apprenticeship or other employment in the Horticulture industry, particularly in the area of landscaping.

    VCAL in 2009 will focus on assisting students to plan and experience vocational tasters, with a view to further study within TAFE, beyond VCAL. It will also prepare you for entry level employment.

    Further Study Options     

    VCAL Horticulture: At the end of your studies in this program you can choose to continue your studies in Horticulture or VCAL, or any other course of your choosing.

    At the conclusion of your VCAL program, you can apply for any vocational course within TAFE. You will be assisted to develop your pathway during your VCAL program. Your experience in the VCAL Taster program may assist you to gain entry to another vocational program.

    Assessment    

    You will be assessed as part of this course.

    Packaging Rules     

    In order to gain a VCAL certificate, you need to study 1000 hours in 5 strands: Literacy, Numeracy, Industry Specific Skills, Work Related Skills, Personal Development Skills.
