Comments about Diploma in Language - On Campus - Bedford Park - South Australia

  • Objectives
The course was created for students who would not otherwise study a language as part of their degree or who had difficulty completing a language within their degree program. It is designed to provide students with linguistic and cultural competence in a chosen language and thus add greater portability to their qualifications. At the same time, it increases cross-cultural awareness and understanding, and provides the academic rigour of formal language study. By adding linguistic expertise or strengthening skills already gained in a language other than English, students increase their ability to communicate the skills and interests from their main study area to the wider community. Learning outcomes On successful completion of the Diploma in Language students will: * be able to demonstrate a high intermediate level of language proficiency (Beginners stream) or a mid to high advanced level of proficiency (Advanced stream) in a chosen language; * be able to demonstrate a broad knowledge of cultural issues pertaining to the country/countries where the language of their choice is spoken; * have increased their cross-cultural skills; * have developed an academic rigour of formal language study; * have developed a working knowledge of successful strategies for language learning.

    What will I study?

Refer to the program of study.
    Why study Languages at Flinders?

        * We have a series of international exchange links for Indonesian, Spanish, Italian and Modern Greek language students. Through these exchanges you will not only have the opportunity to study overseas as part of your degree but you can access scholarships from the University to support your study and living costs.

        * We won scholarship funding through the Australian Government and European Agencies for students to study in Europe. The University is involved in 3 separate projects in Global Citizenship, Criminology and Environmental Sustainability. Within the Global Citizenship project students can improve their Modern Greek and Italian language skills by studying at either Universitá Roma Tre or the University of Cyprus.

        * Language skills open up language-specific careers, such as translating, interpreting and teaching. There are even more careers that benefit from language training (eg diplomacy, journalism, trade, tourism and hospitality, etc).

The Diploma in Language can be undertaken by any student admitted to an undergraduate degree at the University. The course is offered on a part-time basis, over six consecutive semesters (in addition to a bachelor degree), thus adding one extra year to the overall study program. The course is offered by the Faculty of Education, Humanities, Law and Theology.

The requirements for the Diploma in Language must be undertaken over at least three years; language studies cannot be confined solely to the additional year.

The languages available are French, Indonesian, Italian, Modern Greek, Spanish, Chinese*, German*, Japanese*.

Students can be accommodated at either beginners' or advanced levels of linguistic competence.
