    About the course

    The Master of Medical Science (Pathology) is designed to meet the need for high-level education in medical laboratory science which does not focus exclusively on research.

    It also provides an opportunity for the development of skills in laboratory administration and management. The dissertation component enables the evolution of research skills culminating in the preparation of a publishable journal article.

    Students may elect to exit the course following the completion of the first four subjects and graduate with the Postgraduate Certificate in Medical Science (Pathology) or elect to exit following the completion of the first eight subjects and graduate with a Postgraduate Diploma of Medical Science (Pathology).

    Dissertation

    The following areas of study will be available for dissertation:

        * medical and clinical biochemistry
        * medical aspects of molecular biology
        * endocrine physiology
        * medical microbiology (including virology and parasitology)
        * haematology
        * immunohaematology
        * immunology
        * laboratory quality management
        * oncology
        * histopathology and cytology
        * human cytogenetics
        * reproductive physiology

    Residential school

    There are no compulsory residential schools associated with this course.

    During the latter half of the course frequent communication between students and their dissertation supervisor will be strongly encouraged. Access to the internet is assumed.

    Graduation requirements

    To graduate from the Master of Medical Science (Pathology), students must satisfactorily complete 96 points, comprising eight subjects and a 32 point dissertation.

    To exit with the Postgraduate Diploma of Medical Science (Pathology), students must satisfactorily complete 64 points.

    To exit with the Postgraduate Certificate in Medical Science (Pathology), students must satisfactorily complete 32 points.
